Das \LaTeX3 Projekt ist ein internationales Projekt mit dem Ziel der
Reimplementierung und Erweiterung des Dokumentensystems \LaTeX{}.  Das
erste Arbeitstreffen des Projektes im Jahre 1993 fand in der Zeit vom
19.~M\"arz bis 28.~M\"arz in Mainz statt. Die Projektleitung dankt dem
Zentrum f\"ur Datenverarbeitung der Universit\"at Mainz f\"ur seine
Unterst\"utzung durch Bereitstellung von Arbeitsr"aumen und Equipment.

Teilnehmer des Treffens waren Johannes Braams (PTT Research Neher
Laboratorium, The Netherlands), Dr.~David Carlisle (University of
Manchester, UK), Michael Downes (American Mathematical Society,
Providence, USA), Frank Mittelbach (Document Processing Consultant,
Germany), Dr.~Rainer Sch\"opf (Zuse Institut Berlin, Germany) und
Dr.~Chris Rowley (Open University, London, UK).

Die Schwerpunkte dieses Treffens waren unter anderem Fehlerbehandlung
und Hilfsysteme, generische Formatierungsfunktionen, ein erweitertes
"`Box"'-Konzept welches zus\"atzliche Referenzpunkte unterst\"utzt,
Syntax und Konzeption von komplexen Tabellen, Unterst\"utzung
multilingualer Dokumente, sowie Methoden zur Spezifikation und
Implementierung von Seitenlayout.

Ein wichtiger Aspekt des \LaTeX3 Systems wird ein zuverl\"assiges
Wartungskonzept sowie eine verst\"andliche Release-Politik sein.  Die
dazu n\"otigen Konzepte, wie etwa die Installierung von
Wartungprozeduren, offizielle Adressen und Verfahren zur Meldung von
Fehlern, wurden w\"ahrend des Treffens erarbeitet.  Die Einzelheiten
werden demn\"achst ver\"offentlicht werden, siehe unten.


Publikationen im Umfeld des \LaTeX3 Projektes werden demn\"achst in
elektronischer Form der Allgemeinheit zur Verf\"ugung gestellt. Die
meisten der dazu erforderlichen Vorbereitungen wurden w\"ahrend des
Projekttreffens durchgef\"uhrt.


F\"ur Interessenten an der Arbeit des Projektes gibt es auch ein
offene Mailing-Liste mit Namen {\tt LaTeX-L}. Sie dient als Medium zur
Diskussion von Konzepten, die in \LaTeX3 Verwendung finden sollen,
sowie zur Verbreitung von Informationen des Projektteams.  Zur
Subskription schickt man eine Mail an
