An extension of .B .afm can be omitted from .IR afmfile . An extension of .B .pl can be omitted from .IR plfile . If .I plfile is omitted, it will be derived from .I afmfile by replacing the extension of .I afmfile by .BR .pl . The PL file can be converted to the TFM file needed by TeX by the pltotf utility. .SH OPTIONS .TP .BI \-e encoding Produce a PL file suitable for the font when reencoded using .IR encoding . There should be a file called .IB encoding .enc in the same place that TFM files are kept. This should give the PostScript name of each element of the encoding vector (without a leading .BR / ). Names should be separated by white space. Use the name .B .notdef for empty elements of the vector. .SH FILES .B /usr/local/tex/fonts/*.enc .SH "SEE ALSO" .BR tex (L), .BR pltotf (L), .BR dvitops (L), .IR "PostScript Language Reference Manual" . .SH BUGS .LP The same character must not occur more than once in the encoding vector. .LP There is no single `right' way to generate a PL file from an AFM file. .B aftopl tries to do something reasonable. If you don't like the results, you should feel free to edit the PL file. .LP If a composite character is included in the encoding vector, then all of its components must also be included; for example, if .B aacute occurs then so must .B a and .BR acute . .B aftopl does not check this. .SH AUTHOR James Clark
